Maptales Mobile

Maptales Mobile is a Java-based application for mobile phones that allows you to track your routes, add posts and tags and directly upload everything to Maptales. For using Maptales Mobile, you need:

  • A mobile phone that supports Java and Bluetooth
  • A Bluetooth GPS device
  • A phone contract that allows you to upload data over internet connections
  • A Maptales user account to which the data will be uploaded to

Maptales Mobile has been created with ease of use in mind and provides a simple, straightforward interface for mobile storytelling. It is the optimal companion to the Maptales web application, where uploaded stories can be edited, published and exported to other formats.

If you do not have a Maptales account yet, you can always create one for free. Maptales allows you to edit your tracked routes and locations and share them with your friends. Content uploaded to Maptales can be published to your personal website or blog or exported in various data formats including KML (for viewing in Google Earth) and RSS/Atom.

Maptales Mobile is provided as an unsigned public beta, since we do not have the resources to test and optimize it on all available phone models. Maptales Mobile is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY; without even the implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. Maptales Mobile is distributed under the GPL open source license (see below).

Depending on your phone model, you may need to use the JAD or JAR link above for the installation to work.

Logging routes can be controlled when creating a post or in the main screen. Logged routes are part of your story and will be uploaded to maptales.com, where the logging data can be edited.
Whole stories can be uploaded to Maptales for editing and publishing. Individual items can be reviewed and edited on the phone before uploading.
